It’s Official: Disney Buys 20th Century Fox Properties

The Walt Disney Company has announced that it is acquiring 21st Century Fox‘s film and television studios, cable entertainment networks and international TV businesses for $52.4 billion dollars.

But forget all that financial babble — all comic book fans want to know is: When will the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool be reunited with the House of Ideas? Well, it’s certainly going to happen, as Disney’s release stipulates:

“The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love.”

Your First Look at Sophie Turner as Phoenix

The next installment in the long-running X-Men series, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will see the mutant heroes battling one of their own, telepath Jean Grey, when she is driven mad after being possessed by the Phoenix, an entity of nearly unlimited power.

Entertainment Weekly has the first images from next fall’s big movie, depicting star Sophie Turner (Sansa, GAME OF THRONES) as Phoenix. When she turns evil, she becomes known as Dark Phoenix.

According to director Simon Kinberg, the Phoenix force is awakened after a solar flare hits the team during a mission in space. First-time helmer Kinberg wrote and produced a number of previous X-flicks.

‘The New Mutants’ Film Scares Up its First Poster

This spring will see the debut of a new group of superheroes who are mutants, but not part of the X-Men, and their movie aims to be nothing like the complicated long-running franchise featuring their elders.

Today’s release of the creepy first poster for The New Mutants confirms that director Josh Boone is going all-in on something totally new: a superhero horror movie.

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” Boone (The Fault in our Stars) said. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

Debuting back in the 1980s, The New Mutants (created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod)  comic book series featured a handful of youngsters gathered by X-Men mentor Professor Xavier, who intended to teach them how to control their powers, but not for the purpose of being superheroes. However, events conspired to force the fledgling team into battle.

X-23 Tears It Up in NSFW ‘Logan’ Trailer

The final Hugh Jackman Wolverine movie, Logan, opens today, and from all accounts, this is going to be the Wolverine movie we’ve all been waiting for: one packed with action, bloodshed and Professor X dropping F-bombs.

Who cares if the movie’s 2024 setting makes the already mishmashed X-Men movie timeline look like ground hamburger? Just accept that it’s two years after X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Professor X is suddenly 90, Logan is.. really old and there’s a little girl named Laura (aka X-23) with adamantium claws causing havoc while on the run from Hellfire Club exile Donald Pierce, who has grafted cybernetic parts to himself and runs a group of rogues called the Ravagers.

Based on the story “Old Man Logan” from Wolvie’s comic book series, Logan is directed by James Mangold, who also did 2013’s The Wolverine, but it is not set in the same timeline as that previous film. Got that? Actually, it doesn’t matter to the casual movie fan.

Third Wolverine Flick Named Simply ‘Logan’

The third Wolverine solo movie got a name and a teaser poster today. As revealed by star Hugh Jackman on Twitter, director James Mangold‘s second Wolvie film — and Jackman’s last — will be called simply Logan.

To go along with the spare name, Jackman also unveiled a minimalist poster, which appears to depict Wolverine Logan holding the hand of a child. The vibe of the poster is very Schindler’s List, evocative of the supposed darker direction of this installment.

I like the name a lot — especially considering the horrible alternatives. We could have ended up with The X-Men: Logan or Wolverine 3: Logan or Wolverine: Episode III — An X-Men Story or, worse, X-Men Origins: Wolverine 3, or some other monstrosity. But 20th Century Fox is trusting the audience to recognize this is an X-Men-related movie, so it isn’t spoonfeeding fans a saga title like The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials or (the worst) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2.

As for the poster, it hints at the story line, which is supposedly loosely based on the “Old Man Logan” story from the comics, which saw an aged Logan back in action in a dystopian far future. Notice that Logan’s hand is heavily scarred and cut.

Director Adds New Jubilee to ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

Director Bryan Singer used his Instagram (as usual) to announce that Lana Condor has been cast as Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Condor is the definition of a Hollywood newcomer, with no known TV or film credits. Jubilee has appeared in cameos in previous X-Men films. She was played by Katrina Florece in X-Men (2000) and Kea Wong in X2: X-Men United (2003) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).

Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, Jubilee first appeared in 1989’s Uncanny X-Men #244, and was a mainstay in the 1990s animated series.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’: Mutants of a Different Age

Turner, Sheridan and Shipp are the new mutants on the block.

Director Bryan Singer has revealed the newest members of the cast of the newest X-Men movie, next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Sophie Turner (Sansa, GAME OF THRONES) will portray Jean Grey/Marvel Girl/Phoenix;  Tye Sheridan will play Scott Summers/ Cyclops; and Alexandra Shipp will be Ororo Munroe/Storm.

The X-Men. All of Them.

The good folks over at gaming site IGN apparently had a little free time on their hands, so they decided to make a video covering every X-Man in the Marvel Comics universe — ever. That’s a pretty daunting task on its own, but the editors also decided to try to explain X-Men continuity! They do a pretty good job for such an expansive subject.

It all goes by too quickly to be sure IGN got everyone, but it looks to be pretty inclusive.
