James Corden — whom many DOCTOR WHO fans will recognize as Craig Owens from “The Lodger” and “Closing Time” — has been named Craig Ferguson‘s replacement as host of THE LATE LATE SHOW on CBS. Ferguson is leaving the program in late December, and Corden will take over in 2015.
Corden, who won a Tony for One Man, Two Guvnors and a BAFTA for the U.K. comedy series GAVIN AND STACEY, said:
I can’t describe how thrilled and honored I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson. To be asked to host such a prestigious show on America’s No. 1 network is hugely exciting. I can’t wait to get started, and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy.
From the amount of hate expressed online, it appears clear that conservative-minded viewers think that when Stephen Colbert takes over LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, he’s going to turn it into THE COLBERT REPORT ON A BROADCAST NETWORK.
Relax, Fox News. Take a chill pill, Rush Limbaugh (on second thought, Rush, stay away from pills!). The Stephen Colbert who appears on THE COLBERT REPORT is a fictional character; he’s not real, he’s a fabrication. Think of it this way: That Stephen Colbert would fit perfectly into the fantasyland where most GOP politicians think they live.
In other words: No connection to the real world.
When Colbert takes over for the master sometime next year, he will be hosting the show as himself, a “persona” that has not really been seen publicly in years. By all accounts, the real Colbert is a fun and affable person. He certainly has the proper amount of respect for the genre. In a statement, Colbert said:
“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
Transplanted Scotsman Craig Ferguson moderated the DOCTOR WHO panel at Comic-Con last weekend, and Matt Smith dropped by his chat show, THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON, last night to be utterly charming — and make me even more sad that he is leaving the role of the Doctor.
Among the most interesting bits are Matt mentioning he’s buds with Nathan Fillion and Matt’s imitation of the English Wood Pigeon!
Why, why must you go, Matt?
My favorite late-night chat program is, without a doubt, THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON, and that’s because Craig Ferguson is the best late-night host on TV, bar none. No one else even comes close to Craig in terms of creativity, interesting personality and razor-sharp improv skills. Craig basically does his show solo each night, and he’s more entertaining than David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien combined. (I don’t count Jay Leno because THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO clearly is not meant to be a comedy program, since there has been absolutely nothing funny on it since he took over from the legendary Johnny Carson.)
