Despite the presence of naturally occurring Christmas trees, a self-spinning Christmas tree, a bona fide Christmas miracle and a big blue box that isn’t the TARDIS but still transports people to a distant planet in the far future, the 2011 DOCTOR WHO Christmas special really didn’t feel all that…Christmas-y to me. Not that I minded; I still enjoyed “The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe” immensely. The Doctor wanted this to be “the best Christmas ever,” but that title still resides with last year’s “A Christmas Carol.”
Set in the English countryside in 1941, TDTWATW saw the Doctor (Matt Smith) posing as the eccentric caretaker of a manor to be occupied by Madge Arwell (Claire Skinner) and her children, Lily (Holly Earl) and Cyril (Maurice Cole), who are avoiding . Madge has been resisting telling the children that their father, Reg, was lost flying a mission over the Channel, for fear of ruining the holiday for her children forever.
We’re just a few days away from Christmas — but that’s still too long to wait for the 2011 DOCTOR WHO Christmas special, “The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.” Here in the colonies, we’ll be able to see the delightful Matt Smith‘s second Xmas adventure as the 11th Doctor on BBC America at 9 p.m. on Dec. 25.
To help us limp through the final days to the finish line, the BBC has released not one, not two, but three short preview clips to whet our appetites even more than the tension-filled prequel did!
The first (very funny) clip sees the Doctor welcome Madge, Lily and Cyril to their new home for the holiday — as only the last of the Time Lords can!
As if it weren’t already torture waiting for this year’s DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special, “The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe,” the BBC has released an official prequel starring the 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, and it is pretty terrific!
In just over a minute and a half, producer Steven Moffat manages to really hook the viewer with suspense, mystery and emotion. This is not just a clip or a teaser, it’s the actual prequel.
Smith’s second Xmas special as the 11th Doctor airs on Dec. 25 (natch). Have a look at the prequel now:
