Wonder Where Wonder Woman Comes From?

The latest trailer for this summer’s hotly anticipated Wonder Woman claims to be the “official origin trailer,” but it only teases at Diana’s true secret origins. Instead, it gives us glimpses of her girlhood and the martial society of the Amazons on the island of Themyscira. It looks like we’ll have to wait until the film opens to see which of her several origin stories (if any) from the comic books  will be used.

The trailer itself, however, is another gem, full of action of and great visuals, and further amps up my hopes for a great movie. I really want this one to break the DC curse and be genuinely great, with no reservations. And how about this terrific new poster, depicting WW on a beach at dusk? Awesome!

Wonder Woman Draws (Steals) a Special Sword

WONDER WOMAN (2017) Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

Director Patty JenkinsWonder Woman is one of the most anticipated movies of the upcoming summer season, so every sliver of information about it is worth examining.

In this photo, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, the future Wonder Woman, Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot), is stealing a magical Amazonian sword known as the “god killer,” which she intends to take to Man’s World. The theft angers her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen).

Jenkins described the import of the scene to the magazine: “This is her moment. She’s heard all the terrible things about man’s land. But she’s also heard that mankind is in need and under duress. This is her great moment to make the decision to be the one to try and save them.”

Let’s look at the pulse-pounding trailers for the action flick (both spliced together):

She’s a Wonder of a Woman!

wonderpicDirector Zack Snyder shocked and delighted Comic-Con International: San Diego this morning (or so I hear, because I’m not there!) with teaser footage from the still-filming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — and the reveal of Wonder Woman!

While the 20 seconds of film footage are not available, the image of Gal Gadot in all her Amazonian glory is. What do you think? Works for me!

After so many misfires onscreen and on the page, I think somebody (Michael Wilkinson, to be exact) got a modern Wonder Woman costume right! And Gal‘s glare looks pretty convincing, too.

First Look at Cavill’s Second Go as Superman

supesMos2The first glimpse of Henry Cavill back in costume as Superman for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has come courtesy of newspaper USA Today.

There are no noticeable changes to the red-and-blue jammies, but to me Cavill’s hairline looks… odd. When I saw this, the first thought that leaped to mind was: “Don’t you think he looks tired?” (Am I right, Whovians?)

Designing Wonder Woman’s Movie Outfit: ‘Scary Prospect’

WonderWomansThe costume designer for the upcoming Batman vs. Superman (working title) movie is Michael Wilkinson, the same guy who came up with the textured supersuit for Man of Steel, Babydoll’s schoolgirl seifuku in Sucker Punch, the high-tech bodystockings of TRON: Legacy, the realistic superhero costumes for Watchmen and the minimalist battle togs in 300.

In addition to making some fixes to Superman’s (Henry Cavill) uniform and creating something new for Batman (Ben Affleck), Wilkinson — a frequent collaborator with director Zack Snyder — also had to design some version of Wonder Woman’s (Gal Gadot) classic star-spangled costume that would feel new but also respect her 70+ years of history. Wilkinson told TheWrap that the process was a “thrilling and slightly scary prospect.”

DC Triples-Down on Wonder Woman

gal-gadot-wwWarner Bros. and DC Entertainment have done a complete 180 on Wonder Woman. The publisher and studio have switched from having absolutely no confidence in the property at all — they nixed a WW film written by Joss Whedon, for Hera’s sake!!! — to committing her to appear in three upcoming movies, including one solo adventure.

Controversial casting choice Gal Gadot revealed that when she signed to play the Amazon in Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Man of Steel sequel  Batman vs. Superman (working title), she actually committed to a three-picture deal. According to showbiz bible Variety, she will be paid $300,000 for each of her appearances. First up after Bats v. Supes, Variety says:

“Gadot will play the role in a Justice League movie and a Wonder Woman stand-alone film.”

Wonder Woman Actress Defends Herself

galWWgadotGal Gadot, the actress who would be Wonder Woman, has responded to knee-jerk fandom criticism of her casting in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman.

Seemingly within moments of the announcement of Gadot winning the role, the bashing started: “not pretty enough,” “too skinny,” “her boobs aren’t big enough” — the backlash against this virtually unknown actress (most recognized for a smallish role in the Fast & Furious franchise) got ugly fast.

Gadot was rather inelegantly interviewed by top Israeli entertainment show GOOD EVENING WITH GAI PINES recently, and got a chance to deflect the mean-spirited bashing:

Q: It’s been said that you’re too skinny for the part. Wonder Woman is large-breasted, is that going to change?

Hmm. I represent the Wonder Woman of the new world. Breasts… anyone can buy for 9,000 shekels and everything is fine. By the way, Wonder Woman is Amazonian, and historically accurate Amazonian women actually had only one breast. So, if I’d really go ‘by the book’… it’d be problematic.
