Doctor Doom to Star in a Movie!

In the second-best news a Fantastic Four fan could possibly hope to hear — the best would be that the film rights to the franchise have returned to Marvel — signature villain Doctor Doom will star in his own live-action movie. Even better, that flick will be made by Noah Hawley, the brilliant auteur behind FX’s LEGION and FARGO!

Hawley declined to share any details about the project after announcing it at San Diego Comic-Con during his panel centered on LEGION.

Doom is the arch-enemy of the Fantastic Four — Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and Thing — and his character has been butchered even worse than the superheroes’ in 20th Century Fox’s previous FF movies.

Face it, True Believer: He is the classic Marvel villain!

In the comic books, Doom is more of a tragic figure, the misguided ruler of the fictional European nation of Latveria who was horribly scarred by his own experiment in college. In the Fox movie universe, Doom is depicted as a hanger-on to the title quartet who just happened to be mutated in a bad way while the others got to be heroes. Ugh.

STARGATE ORIGINS to Carry on the Adventure — in the Past!

One of my very favorite science-fiction franchises, Stargate, has been sidelined for about seven years or so,  but it’s coming back! STARGATE ORIGINS, a new live-action digital-only series, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con!

Based on the 1994 movie Stargate (1994), which starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, ORIGINS will follow Catherine Langford, the daughter of Professor Paul Langford, the scientist who uncovered the stargate in Giza in 1928, when she was just a little girl.

Produced by and for Stargatecommand.co, SO will consist of ten 10-minute episodes written by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry and directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan. Production will begin in August for a fall debut exclusively on stargatecommand.co, a joint effort by MGM’s Digital Group and the studio New Form.

Take a look at the mini teaser (consisting solely of footage from the movie) that accompanied the announcement:

SO will be not unlike STAR TREK: DISCOVERY  — a digital continuation of a beloved sci-fi series that anchors a new streaming service.

Marvel Tries Again With a New INHUMANS Trailer

Marvel unveiled a new trailer at San Diego Comic-Con for its forthcoming INHUMANS TV series on ABC, and this one  is packed with action in a bid to make the September-bowing series look less cheap and boring. This trailer focuses on the fact that the series premiere will be seen in IMAX theaters on Sept. 1, before debuting on the small screen on Sept. 29.

Well, there were lots of guns and shouting, plus some martial arts. We got our first clear look at Crystal (Isabelle Cornish) who will have golden eyes, for some reason. Her hair does look pretty fun, though. We also see Triton (Mike Moh) for the first time. He’s the one with the green skin, gills and ridge on his head. What, no fishy scales covering his whole body? And why can’t Karnak (Ken Leung) wear his trademark hat? I suppose the tattoos from the more modern iteration of the character are better than nothing.

SYFY unveils Updated Teaser for Prequel Series KRYPTON

Yes, it’s true: SYFY is still developing a prequel series that trace the House of El on Krypton long before Kal-El was rocketed to Earth to become Superman.

It seems the series wants to paint Kal as coming from a line of heroes, not just his scientific genius father, Jor-El. So, I guess it’ll be like GOTHAM? (Hopefully, less boring, tho, amirite?)

It’s hard to tell what the series will be like from the teaser, except that it will have chases, martial arts and explosions. Sigh.

The official line from SYFY is: Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, KRYPTON follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, THE HALCYON) — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos. KRYPTON premieres in 2018 on SYFY.

Do you have any interest in watching the adventures of Superman’s grandpa on his home planet? Let me know in the comments section.

This ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Trailer Lives Up to the Legacy

We all know that original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott has gotten the band back together to finally make a sequel to the 1982 classic. Now we’re starting to get a real feel for what the much-anticipated followup is going to look like.

Executive Producer Scott convinced Harrison Ford to reprise one of his signature roles, grizzled cop Rick Deckard, alongside Ryan Gosling as new replicant hunter Officer K, in a story from original co-scripter Hampton Fancher.

So far we’ve seen some promising stills and footage, but anyone can string together a few eye-popping images. Can director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) deliver an entire movie worthy of following in the footsteps of Scott’s visually stunning masterpiece? The early evidence suggests that he can! Check it:

Meet the 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker

Jodie Whittaker, the newly crowned 13th Doctor, gave her first interview to Blogtor Who! Here are the highlights from her comments.

On being the first female Doctor:

“It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. It feels incredible.

“I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”

Jodie Whittaker IS the 13th Doctor!

The 13th Doctor on DOCTOR WHO will be portrayed by Jodie Whittaker, best known to American audiences from BROADCHURCH.

Whittaker, the first woman to ever play the role, takes over from Peter Capaldi, who played the 12th Doctor for three seasons, culminating in the just-concluded 10th series.

While DOCTOR WHO fans have known since January that Capaldi would not be returning for the 11th season, word that the identity of the next Doctor would be revealed today only came on Friday, via a wordless video from the BBC.

DOCTOR WHO returns to BBC America with its traditional Christmas special on Dec. 25.

Lando Calrissian Copies the Doctor’s Poor Fashion Sense!

Ron Howard, who has taken over as director of the troubled untitled Han Solo… er, solo film, has already leaked more teaser material about the Star Wars standalone project than the previous directing duo, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, did during their tenure helming the project, which is great, but his latest teaser may not have the effect intended.

Earlier today, the Oscar-winning director tweeted the above image from the film’s set. It was intended as a sneak peak at Lando Calrissian’s wardrobe, but the most prominent garment is absolutely unmistakable!

Can I guess whose closet it is? Yup! It must belong to the Sixth Doctor!

No one else in all of time and space could have a fashion sense that questionable!

Colin Baker‘s sartorial assault on the senses was his Doctor’s trademark! Am I sensing an intergalactic copyright lawsuit against Lando actor Donald Glover?

Rest assured, the Doctor has never relied upon frivolous lawsuits, and doubtless he isn’t about to start after some 2,000 years. But the costume similarity is clear, and now you won’t be able to unsee it! Clashing colors FTW!

The Han Solo movie — assuming it gets finished and gets an official name — will be released May 25, 2018.

The Sixth Doctor‘s crusade against couture is available on DVD and online services including iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play and Vudu as part of the “Classic Series.” The modern, rebooted DW, which began in 2005, is only available on Amazon Prime.
