Behold This Disturbing Image of Cara Delevingne as Enchantress

Enchantress-Empire

After shocking us with a truly… um… unique image of Jared Leto‘s Joker earlier in the week, the good folks over at Empire magazine have come up with another stunning cover image — for better or worse — from next summer’s Suicide Squad movie.

Witness: Cara Delevingne‘s Enchantress!

So what, exactly, is this visual? It appears to be a photograph that has been digitally altered with software — what we in the publishing industry call a “photo illustration.” Yes, there has been enough digital surgery performed on this pic to actually attract attention away from Cara’s eyebrows!

So who, exactly, is Enchantress? Well, that’s a little more complicated.

In the comic books she’s June Moon, a freelance artist attending a costume party at an old castle who stumbles upon a secret chamber where the magical Dzamor empowers her to fight an evil presence in the castle. Reciting the words “The Enchantress” changes her from blonde June to raven-haired Enchantress, and allows her to defeat a minotaur. A few appearances later, she fights Supergirl, and June’s villainous side takes over for good. She mostly labored in obscurity with The Forgotten Villains (she was even whimsically nicknamed “The Switcheroo Witcheroo”), but her profile was raised significantly when DC launched its New 52 comic book line and Enchantress faced off against Justice League Dark.

However, there is no guarantee the Enchantress depicted in Suicide Squad will be the same as the comic book character. In fact, they look nothing alike. But then, this movie’s Deadshot (Will Smith) doesn’t look like the comic book guy, either. Nor does Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) resemble her four-color avatar.

The Enchantress of the Suicide Squad movie is more enigmatic.

Delevingne has described Enchantress as “two different parts,” saying, “I’m playing opposites: a mousy kind of scientist and then a crazy, feral witch — which is great. They’re both sides of my personality, so that’s nice.

Delevingne says in this issue of Empire.that Enchantress possesses June Moon, who gets more than she bargained for while exploring a cave:

“[Enchantress is] an ancient sorceress, a feral being. She’s been trapped for so long and now she’s finally let out. June is an adventure-seeker who’s always wanted some excitement. And she gets what she wished for, in an terrible way.”

There’s a rumor that Enchantress will turn out to be the “villain” in this movie — or, at least, the Big Bad that the Squad has to battle. But there was also an early rumor that she was the Suicide Squad’s mission, so to speak. There is talk that Lex Luthor contracts the Squad to steal some “bio weaponry” from an armored convoy — and that “bio weaponry” turns out to be June Moon.

She certainly is not mousy in appearance…

Is this the costume of the same Cara Delevingne who said: “Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute.”

Directed by David AyerSuicide Squad stars Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang,  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adam Beach as Slipknot and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, as well as Smith, Robbie and Delevingne.

Suicide Squad will be released Aug. 5, 2016.
