This bootleg short film based on the children’s TV series MIGHTY MORPHIN’ POWER RANGERS is called Power/Rangers and was directed by Hollywood veteran Joseph Kahn (Torque), who got big names Katee Sackhoff (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) and James Van Der Beek (DAWSON’S CREEK) to star in his bloody, foul-language-filled reimagining.
This movie is so far beyond awesome that I can’t even.
Just watch it. (Defintely NSFW or kids):
What an impressive work! A fun, thoughtful story (weaponized teenagers with serious PTSD issues) and an eclectic cast that includes a genre fave, a TV heartthrob, Fast & Furious‘ Will Yun Lee and porn stars Bree Olsen and Amia Miley, along with enough F-bombs and bloody stabbings to keep Quentin Tarantino entertained.
What does this short teach us? I think it proves that there is no such thing as a bad idea, only bad execution. With enough dedication, thought and, yes, love, any property can be done well.
This little film was paid for by Kahn himself, and he not only doesn’t want any money for it, he refuses to accept any donations. He says he made it to be enjoyed for free. Check out what he told Hitflix about the project.
Also, this isn’t an audition for a feature-length Power Rangers movie. Says Kahn:
The irony here is that I wouldn’t even want to make Power Rangers: The Movie for real. Like, if I had to make a ‘Power Rangers’ movie, this is it. It’s 14 minutes long and it’s violent and this is what I have in me. If they offered me the 200 million version, the PG-13 version, I literally wouldn’t do it. It’s just not interesting to me.
