An all-female Avengers team called A-Force will emerge from the Secret Wars event, taking over after older versions of the team have disbanded (or worse), Marvel Comics has announced.
The team will be led by She-Hulk; Dazzler; Medusa; Nico Minoru; Singularity, a new heroine with cosmic powers; and others to be announced.
The cover of the first issue, drawn by Jim Cheung, features a huge potential roster, including: She-Hulk, Medusa, Singularity, Dazzler, Nico, Storm, Scarlet Witch, Rogue, Phoenix, Wasp, Captain Marvel, Spider-Woman, Pixie, Elektra, Rescue, Spider-Gwen, Black Widow, Moondragon, Snowbird, Aurora, Capt. Marvel II, Hellcat, Firestar, Vindicator, Jubilee and Spectrum.
A-Force will be written by G. Willow Wilson, who rebooted Ms. Marvel as a Muslim character, and Marguerite Bennett (Angela: Asgard’s Assassin) and artist Jorge Molina (X-Men).
Wilson said, in a press release accompanying the announcement:
We’ve purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters — from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies. They’ll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?
Obviously not all of these characters will be on the team at one time — that roster would make the Legion of Super-Heroes look like a three-piece band — and several of them are X-Men, who are always busy somewhere else.
And why is Phoenix there at all? Is that some kind of hint about the outcome of Secret Wars? In fact, is the whole cover a sneak peak at the new, post-Secret Wars status quo? Notice that Storm, She-Hulk, Rogue and Dazzler are wearing old-school togs, while the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel is in her latest uniform.
Answers should be forthcoming when the title debuts in May.
