Two of Marvel Comics’ most popular characters — Captain America and Thor — are undergoing big changes in the pages of their comic books: an African-American will wield Cap’s shield, while Thor’s hammer will be toted by a woman!
Steve Rogers saved the world again, but not without personal sacrifice. Sam Wilson, his partner the Falcon, is becoming the new Captain America.
Marvel announced Tuesday on THE VIEW, of all venues, that Thor, the god of thunder, would do something to make him unworthy to wield Mjolnir, the magic hammer that gives him his powers and will be replaced by a female Thor who will become the new god of thunder — seemingly making “Thor” more of a title than a name.
Thor writer Jason Aaron said:
This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is Thor. This is the Thor of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.
This isn’t the first time in the character’s 52-year comics career that Thor’s uru hammer has changed hands; sometimes the resulting stories have been fun (Frog Thor) or even great (Beta Ray Bill!) — but it’s also been a disaster (Eric Masterson/Thunderstrike).
Stunning — and temporary — alterations to the status quo have become common sales gimmicks in recent years, so jaded comics fans are wondering how long the shakeups will last, while some fans of Marvel’s successful movies are wondering if the new Cap and Thor are headed for the silver screen…
