NBC has decided to go to series this fall with CONSTANTINE, the adaptation of DC Comics’ Hellblazer comic book series starring trickster/magician John Constantine.
That’s good news, and this first trailer is actually cause for jubilation because it looks like the TV show is trying to adapt the John Constantine character that appeared in the Hellblazer comics — and the John Constantine who appeared in the Hellblazer comics was a total asshole! Seriously, the guy is venal and selfish, his methods are questionable at best, and he is generally the furthest thing from a superhero.
That’s Matt Ryan as Constantine, and I think he captures the character perfectly. He looks exactly like the Constantine on the page, and his smug, sardonic line deliveries are just like I hear his voice in my head. From this clip you can get a sense of Constantine’s reluctance to get involved — and the mess he usually makes of things.
So hooray for NBC going for a complicated lead character! Constantine eventually ends up doing the right thing, but not entirely voluntarily and usually on his own terms. He’s the kind of guy who’s willing to double-cross the devil and think he can get away with it.
There’s no premiere date at this early stage, but CONSTANTINE is tentatively slated for Friday nights. A Friday slot is generally a death sentence, but this show is on NBC — which is kind of a death sentence on its own.
