‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Poster Disappoints

apeposterWell, it was bound to happen. The makes of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have finally hit a sour note.

This poster is their first misstep, as far as I’m concerned. This is meant to be Caesar and one of his offspring, and his glower is supposed to tell us that he would do anything to protect his child. Oh, really? Is that something we have to be told?

I find the little baby ape clinging to its daddy to be nauseatingly cute — not the message I think the filmmakers want to send about their epic action-adventure movie about the end of human civilization. Are we supposed to think that this image means apes will create a utopia of peace of love and unlimited rice pudding?

Oh, hell, I’ll come right out and say it: This looks like a transparent attempt to woo female viewers by presenting a loving family scene; preying cheap emotion and the “cute animal antics” that the interwebs are famous for promoting. I think the movie should be able to stand on its own, without tawdry sentimentality.

Oh, yeah? Sez you!
