Ben McKenzie (SOUTHLAND and THE O.C.) will play a young detective Jim Gordon, the future police commissioner of Gotham City. The series is expected to center on Gordon’s growth as a law-enforcement officer, and how the Gotham Police Department deals with the rise of the psychopathic villains who will eventually become Batman’s rogues gallery. But don’t hold your breath for the Joker to show up; the show is starting small — with Penguin.
The other cast members include:
Donal Logue as Det. Harvey Bullock, Gordon’s partner and mentor. Warner Bros. describes him like this:
“The rough-around-the-edges Detective Harvey Bullock plays loose with police procedure, but he gets results… and he does it with old-school, forceful panache.”
Sean Pertwee (son of the late Jon Pertwee, who played the Third Doctor on DOCTOR WHO) as Alfred Pennyworth, the Wayne butler:
“A tough-as-nails ex-Marine from East London, who has loyally served the Wayne family. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he is fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.”
If he looks familiar to you, Pertwee has been playing Lestrade on ELEMENTARY. And he looks enough like his father that with a velvet smoking jacket he could pass for the Doctor!
Robin Lord Taylor as the Penguin:
“[Penguin] has the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal who is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney, who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.”
“A sophisticated ER doctor who is engaged to marry Gordon. She’s joyful but with an edge of vulnerability, who stands by her future husband… which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham.”
Zabryna Guevara as Capt. Essen:
“Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad, who balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that is as much corporate litigator as cop.”
