Indie filmmaker Whit Stillman has written and will direct and executive-produce an original comedy series called Cosmopolitan exclusively for Amazon Studios that follows the experiences of a group of young expatriates living in Paris, according to Deadline.com.
This is great news to me, as I am a big fan of Stillman and his oeuvre, beginning with his first feature, Metropolitan, and on through Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco — what has become known as his “Doomed-Bourgeois-in-Love series.” He usually focuses on upper-crust youths and his dialogue is very involved and intellectual — even when the topic under discussion is more puerile. He directs actors to very… mannered (almost stiff) performances that might remind one of Wes Anderson.
Cosmopolitan sounds perfect for Stillman; like a cross between Metropolitan and Barcelona. I highly recommend both of those films, as well as Disco, and advise you watch them in order of release — Metropolitan (1990), Barcelona (1994) and The Last Days of Disco (1998) — because characters from the earlier movies cameo in Disco.
