It remains to be seen if remaking Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 RoboCop, an unassailable action classic, was a good idea — the smart money says it’s not — but director José Padilha and the rest seem sincere, and there’s some talent in front of the camera, including Gary Oldman and Jackie Earle Haley. If nothing else, at least this movie should remind people that the excellent Michael Keaton is still out there.
The first trailer is better, containing the most new footage — including badass Samuel L. Jackson in a shockingly ridiculous wig. The second is a cut-down version, but still has a couple of different (very brief) scenes.
It appears that Murphy’s wife (Abbie Cornish) is the one pressing Murphy to rediscover his humanity — the role played by his partner, Officer Lewis (Nancy Allen), in the original.
RoboCop opens Feb. 7.
