Long-Gestating Sandman Movie Is Back On!

Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-joseph-gordon-levitt-34334769-500-668People have been trying to make a live-action movie based on acclaimed comics god Neil Gaiman’s influential Sandman series for literally decades, but no one has been able to crack the script problem: There’s just too much magic and drama and whimsy and terror and poetry to fit into a two-hour movie.

Well, as of today, actor/director Joseph Gordon-Levitt thinks he can do it — and is in final negotiations with Warner Bros. to helm the project. JG-L will at least produce, and may also direct and star in the movie as well. There are rumors that he’s confirmed to star and direct, but all JG-L himself will confirm (via Twitter) is that he’s producing, alongside David Goyer. JG-L directed the romantic comedy Don Jon, co-starring Scarlett Johansson, which he also wrote.

Here is what JG-L Tweeted:

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m incredibly honored to be working with David Goyer, Warner Bros, and @neilhimself on SANDMAN. #Prelude

Just to clarify, folks. I’ve signed on as a producer on Sandman. The rest remains to be seen. Delighted you guys are excited. I am too!

sandmanThe hashtag Prelude appears to be a reference to Preludes and Nocturnes, the first book of the 10-volume, 75-issue comic book run, which began in 1989.

Gaiman has apparently given his blessing to this project, as evidenced by JG-L saying he’ll be working with the Sandman’s creator.

And, yes, this is the same David Goyer who so completely misunderstood Superman that he turned the Kryptonian into a murderer in Man of Steel. So that definitely does not bode well for the Lord of Dreams — but Goyer is reportedly not writing the script, instead strictly producing. However, producers can, and do, have tremendous impact on the shape of a project.

So… who wants to see Scarlett as Dream’s sister, Death?

Oh, yeah? Sez you!
