AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN Is Booting Up

AMERICAN HORROR STORY is probably the most loopy series on TV, so maybe that’s why big names line up to star. (I think the reason there’s a new storyline every season is because all the scenery gets chewed right down to the ground, so they have to start over.) The latest series, COVEN, has attracted three ladies who have won Academy Awards as best actress in a lead role, so there must be some meat to the characters they will be playing.

The cast includes Oscar-winners Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett, as well as Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Denis O’Hare, Patti LuPone, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Lily Rabe and Emma Roberts.

Here is the official synopsis for the series:

“COVEN tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.”

The school for young witches sounds like a cross between Harry Potter’s Hogwarts and The X-Men’s Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. And is it just me, or is there something extraordinarily sexy about the image of the girls in heels levitating over their desks?

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN premieres Oct. 9 on FX.
