The Master of the Mystic Arts (and one-time sorcerer supreme) has been confirmed as a key player in Marvel’s upcoming Phase 3, which will follow the release of The Avengers 2 in 2015. Phase 3 will kick off with director Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man in the fall of 2015, so I (and you) can look forward to the release of Doctor Strange sometime in 2016.
Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige said:
“Doctor Strange, which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of [the Phase 3 films]. He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off [for] this criteria that I have: He’s totally different from anything else we have, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is Ant-Man, which keeps us excited.”
According to Latino Review, the villains have been chosen for Doc’s movie — although it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to make an educated guess: Baron Mordo and Dormammu. There will also be an appearance by a Mindless One — an unstoppable mystical creature native to Dormammu’s Dark Dimension.
It sounds like this will be a straight origin story, in which case we can expect to see brilliant-but-uncaring surgeon Stephen Strange, his hands crippled in a car accident, become a student of the mystical Ancient One, where he clashes with favored pupil Karl Mordo. Eventually the jealous Mordo will turn to the unfathomably powerful extradimensional entity Dormammu to take revenge on Strange. Oh, and Dormammu has a beautiful daughter, named Clea…
The only casting rumor I’ve heard (and this was months ago) is Viggo Mortensen as the good doctor, and I have to admit he would be a fine choice, but I’m reserving judgment on dream casting right now.
