The first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has unspooled, and unsurprisingly, it is practically desolate of dragons. Oh, sure, there’s lots of shots of Legolas (Orlando Bloom) notching arrows and threatening to shoot people in the face from point-blank range, but he’s not even supposed to be in this movie.
Yeah, as you can see, we see as little of Smaug as possible. C’mon, you don’t think director Peter Jackson is going to give us the money shot on some random June afternoon, more than six months before his movie premieres, do you? I’m surprised we see as much of the blacked-out beastie as we do.
As for the rest of the footage… well, I see story elements that were in the book (like the dwarves in the barrels), but the rest of it looks like lots of running around to kill time. In other words, it looks a lot like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
