At first blush i was underwhelmed by this image promoting the latest chapter in director Peter Jackson‘s Middle Earth epic. I felt like it was just an overly elaborate art shot designed to showcase how much effort went into crafting styrofoam rocks (though I guess those are probably CGI rocks) and set design.
But after looking it over for a while, I think I like it now. Now it radiates loneliness and how insignificant Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) must feel in the blasted, seemingly lifeless territory of Smaug, the dragon.
And just look at how Smaug has… well, sterilized the landscape. I’m sure there will be many more such teaser images — and equally sure we will not see Smaug in any of them.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens Dec. 13.
