Matt Smith: The Doctor Will Still Be In!

mattsmith1Matt Smith told Britain’s TV Magazine that he will return to DOCTOR WHO for at least one more series in 2014. This means his 11th Doctor will not be regenerating during the 2013 Christmas Special, as some rumors and fan sites have been claiming.

This is what Matt told TV:

“I’m on a break for a couple of months while I’m in Detroit making How To Catch A Monster. We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014.”

Matt confirmed his participation in the Xmas show back in March, which mooted the idea of a regeneration in the 50th anniversary story airing on Nov. 23. Now, this announcement means the 11th Doctor will be the longest serving of the revived series.

Matt SmithThis is the best news I could hope for — except maybe a two-year commitment from Matt, but let’s be reasonable — and I couldn’t be happier. I hope that the way the show let Matt come to America to make a Hollywood movie — in Ryan Gosling‘s directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster — persuades him that he can do both DOCTOR WHO and make movies, and thus he will decide to stay with the series even longer. After all, Matt has always maintained that it’s a year-to-year decision, and production of the ninth series could begin in late 2014, after he’s gone off and done some other project.

U.S. TV stars regularly do other work during series hiatus; it’s nothing new here, and hopefully it will become routine for Matt. As I’ve said before, I want Matt to play the Doctor until he’s an irascible old man, just like the First Doctor!
