A new trailer was also released over the weekend, and while it adds nothing of substance to any storyline rumors, it does have the advantage of being fairly dull and generic. So I’m featuring the poster here, and you can follow the jump to get to the new video clip.
So here it is…
The only really good thing about the trailer is the few seconds of character bits, including Scotty (Simon Pegg) and the big fish, and Zoe Saldana’s wetsuit. The part with Kirk (Chris Pine) rocketing through a debris field looks like a shameless attempt to repeat the space-diving scene from the first movie. And does that flat vessel that Kirk flies remind anyone else of another ship…. One that might rhyme with… uh, let’s say, an Aluminum Falcon?
This Trek flick is rolling out in two stages — which is definitely a very bad idea. It debuts in IMAX 3D theaters on May 15 for folks with some stupid app, and then normal theaters on May 17. Not only do folks who lack access to a IMAX theater get left out in the cold, but this is a blatant, transparent attempt to prop up the doubtless-shitty 3D version of the movie But desperate fanboys will buy the May 15 tix, and the studios will say, “See? The demand is there!” even though it truly isn’t. . Look, 3D was fun for Avatar, but that’s it; we’re over it, Hollywood. We’re not interested in needless 3D.
