This is shaping up to be a big week for Dredd, the forthcoming adaptation of legendary British comic strip Judge Dredd, from the long-running weekly anthology 2000 AD. We have new behind-the-scenes photos from the set, and we’ve been told to expect the first trailer Thursday. (It’s likely to be just a teaser, but I’ll take it.)
Today’s offerings show Karl Urban as Judge Dredd and Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson shooting a couple of scenes. That could be Deobia Oparei, who plays Judge Alvarez, next to Anderson, but I’m not sure. We can’t really tell what’s going on, but the uniforms look cool.
Urban has promised fans that he will not remove his helmet onscreen — his comic counterpart is known for never showing his face. Part of what left fans howling back in 1995, when Sylvester Stallone took a crack at adapting the material, was Stallone’s penchant for walking around without Dredd’s helmet. Judge Anderson can take her helmet off all she wants — Thirlby has a pretty face, and the filmmakers want to show her off.
Most people will know Urban from his uncanny portrayal of Bones in JJ Abrams‘ reboot of Star Trek, in which he practically channeled the late DeForest Kelley. After completing Dredd, Urban returned for the insanely secretive Star Trek sequel. Thirlby is probably best known in America as Leah, Ellen Page‘s gal pal in Juno.
Dredd opens Sept. 21.
