John Carter Trailer: “Good God, I’m on Mars!”

Another trailer for the movie adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough‘s legendary A Princess of Mars is out, and I’m not going to mince words here: This is my favorite trailer so far for the movie, to be called John Carter. This trailer is just a brief one minute long, but it makes the story of Carter’s adventures on the red planet look like a ripping yarn! This should be epic.

What makes this trailer work so well? (BTW, I don’t mean to imply that any of the others don’t work; just that this one works best.) It sets up the premise, establishes the stakes and gives viewers a taste of the action to come. In other words, it’s a true tease that doesn’t spoil. Take a look:

Let’s break it down:

At the very beginning of the clip, John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) himself sets the stage: “Good God, I’m on Mars”

Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins) simply and effectively lays out the stakes: Mars is at war, and Earth is next. (Or, to put it in terms aficionados of the books will understand, Barsoom is at war, and Jasoom is next!) As she speaks, a great airship rakes a crowd with a death beam. “Will you stay and fight for us?” she asks. Cut to John saying, “Get on!” Trailer shorthand translation: “I’m in!”

Then we see John in a flyer, some visual effects, an army of four-armed green Martians on charging thoats firing their radium rifles, explosions, a crash, a scowling John, a chained-up John fighting alone, more flying, Dejah Thoris, swooping camera shots, Dejah Thoris fighting with a sword, a battlefield explosion propelling a thoat through the air, and John launching himself into battle against a green horde. In other words…. Action!

After the title, we see John facing a gigantic great white ape single-handed, and then saluting a cheering crowd while coated in blue blood.

I would pay to see that movie!

And you will get your chance to see John Carter on March 9, just one month from today!

Oh, yeah? Sez you!
