The most important development was the reunion of Sun and Jin, who have not seen each other (in the original timeline) since the explosion of the freighter Kahana at the end of Season 4! Let’s hope he can keep his vow: “We’ll never be apart again. I promise you.”
Jack was reunited with Claire on the Island and as well as in the Sideways Universe — but this time they knew they were half-siblings (though Claire found out only moments earlier in the L.A. version). And Claire later threw a spanner in the works by joining up with Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Sun and Frank at the boat. Jack was apparently having another sort of flashback when he confessed to Sawyer that leaving the Island did not feel right. He was still convinced they were all brought to the Island to do something, and that maybe the reason “Locke” is trying to stop it is because he is afraid of what will happen. “The Island’s not done with us yet,” he told Sawyer. Still angry, Sawyer snorted that Jack should take a leap of faith, if that’s what he believes. (Yes, another plot anvil reminding us that Jack is now a Man of Faith). Jack apologized for getting Juliet killed, and then leaped into the water, surrendering a chance to get off the Island. Which is exactly what Sawyer did when he leaped out of the helicopter at the end of Season 4.
This is intriguing in context with Jack’s earlier conversation with MiB about John Locke’s gullibility. MiB insisted that Locke was “stupid” for believing they were brought to the Island for a reason.“John Locke was not a believer, Jack,” MiB charged. “He was a sucker.” As proof of his concern for the Losties, MiB admitted taking Christian’s form way back in the first season in order to lead Jack to water. “All I’ve ever been interested in is helping you,” MiB claimed. “Because Jacob chose you, you were trapped on this Island before you even got here.” MiB insisted that they are all now free to leave because Jacob is dead but, “It has to be all of us.” Claire told her brother, “Whether you like it or not, you’re with him now.” That was a sentiment echoed by MiB after he rescued Jack from Charles Widmore’s mortar attack: “You’re with me now.”
The title of this episode is “The Last Recruit.” Apparently that refers to Jack?
