The Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA has written and directed a movie called The Man With the Iron Fists that looks like one of those old exploitation flicks Quentin Tarantino loves so much. (In fact, QT has attached his name to it, in order to give the film some gravitas.) It looks uncompromisingly brutal when it comes to violence and bloodshed of all types, so of course it deserves a red-band trailer. That’s the kind of trailer that can only be shown before R-rated movies in movie theaters, and is tagged NSFW online. Trust me, this one lives up to its billing. Did I mention that was co-written by Eli Roth (Hostel)?
I remember RZA writing the music for 1999’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, a little-seen Forest Whitaker vehicle written and directed by art-house auteur Jim Jarmusch, about a mob assassin who lives by the code of the samurai. RZA also made his acting debut in that movie. Clearly, RZA knows his stuff. (Heck the collective took its name from the movie Shaolin and Wu Tang.)
Crowe is no stranger to action movies, ranging from his early Western, the Sam Raimi-directed The Quick and the Dead, to his Oscar-winning Gladiator, but it’s cool to see him in a movie where the point is fighting, not the showcase of “Russell Crowe IS so-and-so in….” Liu proved she could handle a katana in the Kill Bill flicks. And Chung is stunningly beautiful and a trained ass-kicker from Sucker Punch.
I like this trailer so much that I decided to call a bit of attention to it by posting on my blog. I stress that this clip is full of violence, bloodshed, fighting and some more blood. So don’t watch it at work, and don’t let some little kid peer over your shoulder – or he might develop an interest in indie films! Make the jump to watch the trailer itself.
Check out this totally bonkers trailer – which, I remind you, is NSFW or minors or anyone who’s sensitive about violence or prone to clutching your pearls for any reason. Fasten your seatbelts! (It’s hosted by IGN, hence the advert.)
The Man With the Iron Fists does not have a release date yet, but I will be keeping an eye… er, out for it!
